A Naturopathic Doctor, commonly called a Naturopath, is a registered medical professional who practices Naturopathic Medicine. Naturopaths are able to evaluate standard blood work and diagnostic tests, and although they do not typically use pharmaceuticals in their practice, they are trained in their functions, interactions and side effects. As training, a Naturopath must complete a 3+-year science-based post-secondary pre-medical program, followed by a 4-year doctorate degree from an accredited Naturopathic College. They must accumulate at least 12 months of clinical experience and pass extensive board exams before receiving a license to practice Naturopathic Medicine. Naturopaths are regulated by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario and required to complete continuing education hours to remain current.
Naturopathic Medicine is a holistic and broad approach to health care that uses modern scientific knowledge and testing alongside natural therapies and medicines to identify, treat and avoid illness or disease within the body. The primary ideology of Naturopathic Medicine centres around addressing the root causes of ailments, rather than treating the symptoms. In addition to clinical and diagnostic testing, a Naturopath may also utilize nutritional science, botanical or herbal medicine, lifestyle counselling and even traditional Chinese medicine. Naturopathy uses a variety of safe and effective drug-free treatment methods.
Naturopathic Medicine can be highly effective for a number of common health conditions, both acute and chronic in nature. Naturopathic Treatment can be used as a form of primary health care, or in complement to conventional medicine, as a Naturopathic Doctor typically works alongside other healthcare professionals.
